vds_speed.jpgIn gusty low wind conditions Michael Naumann (Loft Sails) won the first leg counting towards the german speed windsurfing championship. The wind was just enough for top speeds around 30 knots, not too bad for the choppy conditions in Drankse / Ruegen. Thorsten Mallon (F2, North) came in second ahead of Manfred Merle. luderitz.jpgThat 50 knot barrier is still the subject on plenty of people’s lips at the moment as our colleague kitesurfers get back into serious action !  At Luderitz in Namibia last September at the first ever Luderitz Speed Challenge, these guys set the timing systems on fire with a new women’s world record (Sjoukje Bredenkamp with 42.35 knots) and above all Alex Caizergues’ superb performance of 47.92 knots.

wotrocket2.jpgWot Rocket is half sailboat and half sailplane; a nine metre long canoe style hull with two tiny foils, each about a sixth of the size of a Moth foil and a nine metre rigid sail, then a transverse beam out to an aerodynamic twin pod crew compartment. It is built entirely from carbon fibre and weighs approximately 400 kilos. The countdown to Australia's attempt to reclaim the 500m world speed sailing record last held in 1993 will begin this week with a Wot Rocket crew safety drill before on-water trials commence on Botany Bay next week.

No wind on the final day of the 2008 dutch championship, so the result after three legs stands. Peter de Wit defended his 2007 title and is set for the upcoming speed world championship on Fuerteventura. For all the details please check www.gps-speedsurfing.com.
